#createthenew: The me Convention from September 4-6 in Stockholm: “The Winner Takes It All” - ABBA founding member Björn Ulvaeus and Universal Music’s Top Executive Frank Briegmann give insight into the international music industry

Comunicato Stampa disponibile solo in lingua originale.

The panel including Swedish music legend #bjornulvaeus and #frankbriegmann, President & CEO Central Europe Universal Music and Deutsche Grammophon, is among the highlights of this year’s me Convention in Stockholm. The ABBA supergroup star and the Top Executive provide insight into the music industry and its rules of play. The moderated panel discussion between #bjornulvaeus and #frankbriegmann with Q&A takes place on Wednesday, September 5, from 1:30 – 2:30 pm onstage at Nacka Strandsmässan, the main location for me Convention.

Frank Briegmann and #bjornulvaeus will talk about the international music industry, what’s driving artists and record labels in the music business right now and the role played in the sector by global digitalisation. They will also discuss the significance of the right technology to being at the very front of the competitive field and the characteristics and skills necessary to make it to the top and “take it all”, just like the global ABBA hit from 1980. ABBA co-founder, producer and composer #bjornulvaeus and European Top Music Executive #frankbriegmann will discuss these and other topics beyond the music industry that are the focus of the me Convention.

Top music acts Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) and Felix Jaehn along with other international artists

One vital element of the me Convention is the eclectic and carefully curated evening and satellite programme with parties, concerts, film screenings and art installations. This is where the characteristic atmosphere of the me Convention comes into being.

Felix Jaehn sets the tone at Fotografiska Museet
September 4, 2018, 8:00 pm – 1:00 am

The Fotografiska Museum, housed in an old customs building directly on the waterfront in the city’s docklands, will play host to the me Convention opening ceremony. Following a commencement speech from Anna Gissler, CEO of Stockholm Business Region, me Convention participants will have the opportunity to mingle and network at the opening party with drinks and DJ sets, including a DJ performance by Felix Jaehn. The young icon and Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador thrills fans from all generations and around the world with his characteristic tropical house sound. Felix Jaehn hit the big time aged just 20 years old, when his remix of OMI’s “Cheerleader” made him a household name and scored the Number One chart spot 55 countries all over the world including the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. To date he has sold more than 7.5 million singles, has been streamed over a billion times and won many gold and platinum awards.

Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) performs as headline act in the Historic Södra Teatern
September 5, 2018, 7:00 pm – 1:00 am

On Wednesday, September 5, the historic 18th century Södra Theatre will be transformed into an outstanding party venue. This uniquely-curated evening features parallel performances on four stages from a diverse selection of artists — from indie pop through hip-hop to house. In cooperation with the Live at Heart Festival, indie artists Tall Blonde and Simon Alexander will warm up the large terrace, to be followed by the soul and hip-hop mix of Adée and the electronic beats of Elle Exxe.

It all continues at 10 pm in the theatre’s Kägelbanan Club with a DJ set from Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent). It’s difficult not to worship at the altar of St. Vincent. Annie Clark is a Grammy Award-winning musician who explores emotive ballads, upbeat pop arrangements and experimental spaces alike, incorporating postmodern guitar solos and electronic pulses that display a sweetly sinister sensibility. A critically acclaimed top 10 charting artist on both sides of the Atlantic, she has collaborated with artists ranging from David Byrne to LA hip-hop producer Sounwave. St. Vincent also recently released her signature Ernie Ball Music Man guitar, and made her directorial debut with a short horror film The Birthday Party. Her latest album, MASSEDUCTION, was released in late 2017 and was The Guardian's Album of the Year, while Jon Pareles of The New York Times named it his #1 album of 2017. MASSEDUCTION has been supported by characteristically thrilling St. Vincent live shows the world over, as well as performances on The Graham Norton Show and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The evening in the Kägelbanan will close with a set from creative collective Ladieslovehiphop.

On the main stage, the evening starts off with the start-up slam by smart. As part of the smart urban pioneers support programme, five international start-ups will present their ideas to the jury of Line Gerstrand (Smart City Project Lead, Aarhus), Carolin Güthenke (Senior Manager Marketing Communications & Brand Management at smart), Nat Parker (CEO moovel North America) and Scott Wilcox (Chief Innovation Officer at SXSW). Participants of the start-up slam by smart are Maria Babenko (Watty), Simon Becker (Cabin Spacey), Fredrik Hjelm (VOI), Esteban Sanchez (Commutifi) and Sarper Sila (Boni). The unusual challenge here is that the business ideas will not be presented by the start-ups themselves, but by one of the other competitors for the title.

At 8.30 pm, the film More Human Than Human will celebrate its Swedish premiere on the main stage. In this deeply personal, light-hearted and dramatic documentary, directors Tommy Pallotta and Femke Wolting examine the question of the extent to which Artificial Intelligence could replace human beings and, in this instance, take over the work of a filmmaker. The film celebrated its world premiere at SXSW in Austin in March 2018. Philharmonia Orchestra VR Sound Stage

The London Philharmonia Orchestra will show its latest VR film at the me Convention. Beethoven’s 5th Symphony will be shown on Level II each day of the conference program. The project, a recipient of the Raindance Award, was commissioned by Google Daydream and NASA to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the launch of the Voyager spaceship and was directed by Jessica Brillhart. Voyager lifted off in September 1977 and, in 2012, became the first manmade object to leave our solar system and continue its travels onward through space. Fixed to the spaceship is a golden record that includes the opening bars of Beethoven’s 5th. The eight-minute VR experience pairs scenes from space with footage of Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting the symphony.

About the me Convention

The me Convention lives by the slogan #createthenew. It offers an open and inspiring platform for creative #people from different areas and has a clear focus on dialogue, interaction, networking and entertainment.

The first me Convention, organized by Mercedes-Benz and South by Southwest (SXSW) in September 2017, was a beginning filled with inspiration, innovation and new insights. Over three days, 150 speakers encouraged more than 2,700 visitors from over 35 countries to think in new ways about the future. This year, the car manufacturer and the Texas-based creative, digital and technology festival expanded their collaboration and brought the spirit of the me Convention to SXSW in Austin, Texas this March.

About South by Southwest

SXSW dedicates itself to helping creative #people achieve their goals. Founded in 1987 in Austin, TX, SXSW is best known for its conference and festivals that celebrate the convergence of the interactive, film and music industries. The event, an essential destination for global professionals, features conference programming, showcases, screenings, exhibitions, and a variety of networking opportunities. SXSW proves that the most unexpected discoveries happen when diverse topics and #people come together.
