BENETEAU Presents Air Step 2 A Second Generation For Large Boats

Following 18 months of research and development at the #beneteau Power design office, the new Gran Turismo 40 and 46 are now equipped with the second generation of Air Step® technology. Not only does this development considerably improve efficiency, but it means that at the same speed you can have a larger sized boat without increasing engine power. It is an innovation that is fully in line with the research programmes on the environmental performance of the Powerboat segment, undertaken by Beneteau. Developed in 2003 Air Step® technology was the result of an ambitious research programme. Its goal was to develop a new generation of hulls offering greater sensations in terms of speed and acceleration, while improving boat safety, comfort and efficiency. Initially developed for outboard engines, this patented technology equipped Z drive boats up to 44 foot and provided a considerable sales argument with regard to the competition. In 2004, a modification was made to improve the hulls of the new outboard Flyer range further still.

Remember that derived from aeronautical industry technology, the Air Step® forms small steps under the hull that help evacuate the water stream and reduce the amount of friction. Combined with captured air forming a cushion, as well as runners to the rear of the hull increasing stability, these chevronned steps considerably increase speed while reducing energy consumption. Air Step® 2 marks an important evolution in the air inflow below the hull. By increasing the amount of air beneath the hull threefold, an increase of 1.5 knots, in sea trials on the new GT40 at maximum speed, has been recorded with this new Air Step® technology, in relation to its predecessor, the GT 38, in the same configuration. In other words, the Air Step® 2 allows us to bring aboard an additional weight of 700 kg on this model, while maintaining the same performance. Today Air Step® technology has moved to a whole new level by becoming compatible with IPS engine power. Closely associated with the research carried out by Beneteau, Volvo is delighted with this step forward. It has taken more than 18 months of research and 350 hours of testing to obtain a new combination increasing airflow and changing the shape and arrangement of the steps. Air Step® 2 is therefore a major technological development that offers great perspectives for the development of new large-sized inboard boats. They will offer high performance together with stability, safety and piloting comfort second to none as well as matchless efficiency.
