Mazda3 captures reader's choice award for new car design

It’s another feather in Mazda’s automobile #design cap: After receiving a “Red Dot: Best of the Best“ award in July for outstanding product #design, the new #mazda3 has now prevailed in the compact category at the Autonis reader’s choice awards for the best new car designs of 2019.

As a darling among readers of auto, motor und sport, a popular German fortnightly magazine, the #mazda3 again demonstrates the appeal of the carmaker’s Kodo #design philosophy. Inspired by Japanese aesthetics, the clean, elegant exterior’s smooth surfaces, void of character lines, have been hand-crafted to reflect their surroundings with an extraordinary vibrance that sets the model apart from the competition.

“The key principle is beauty through subtraction,” says Yasutake Tsuchida, chief designer of the new #mazda3. “But it’s more than merely minimalism. This model is about purity of form, which is a result of continuous refinements by our specialists.”

The less-is-more approach is evident inside the car, too. Sophisticated yet simple, the interior was built around people; the cockpit, for example, is in perfect symmetry with the driver. And the #mazda3 not only raises the bar for vehicle #design, but also in terms of innovation. It marks the debut of the carmaker’s ground-breaking Skyactiv-X engine – the world’s first commercially available petrol powerplant to feature compression ignition and with it diesel-like efficiency.

“Winning an Autonis is a great honour as well as an important step in our efforts to drive the #mazda brand upmarket,” explains Jo Stenuit, Mazda’s European #design director. “It also reveals just how much appreciation there is here in Germany for Japanese aesthetics.”

More than 13,000 auto motor und sport readers cast their votes this year, choosing their favourites in 10 categories from 100 new models. The Autonis awards will be presented for the 14th time this evening in Stuttgart.
