Opel Celebrates 2017 with Biggest Product Offensive in its History

  • Product offensive: #insignia, #crosslandx, #grandlandx and co. celebrate debuts
  • Terrific start: #opel gathering pace under new parent company Groupe PSA
  • Preparing the future: Electric option for entire #opel passenger car portfolio

Rüsselsheim. “The future is everyone’s” is #opel new brand credo. And the carmaker is keeping its promise. Never before has #opel launched as many new models with innovative technologies as in the last 12 months. 2017 was the year of change and of the biggest product offensive in the company’s history. The highlight of the year was definitely the Frankfurt Motor Show where #opel CEO Michael Lohscheller presented three world premieres in the #grandlandx compact #suv, the dynamic and sporty #insignia GSi and the adventurous #insignia Country Tourer. “We are continuing the biggest model offensive in Opel’s history. We have made decisive additions to our portfolio this year with the #crosslandx #crossover, the Vivaro Life recreational vehicle, the #grandlandx #suv,” explained Lohscheller in Frankfurt. “Together with Groupe #psa we are creating a European champion. We will do so by continuing to make technology ‘made in Germany’ available to as many customers as possible, thus staying true to our brand credo the future is everyone’s.”

New flagship generation, cool #crossover and SUVs

The year kicked off with the introduction of the new Opel Crossland X, the first model developed in cooperation with Groupe #psa. The both stylish and flexible newcomer celebrated its premiere in a somewhat unusual environment in Berlin. The second member of the X-Family – after the Mokka X #suv bestseller – has all of the #crossover genes it needs to be successful: a cool #suv look with two-tone option, #opel typical leading technologies, an elevated seating position along with a spacious and flexible interior – and all this packed into very compact 4.21 metres. This recipe has helped the cheeky “urban crossover” become a favourite with the customers already – to date, #opel has already received 75,000 orders from across Europe.

Enjoy the off-road feeling – 2017 was a year of rugged but simultaneously sporty and elegant bodies with the certain extra at #opel. In the small car segment, the robust KARL ROCKS arrived at dealerships in the spring. And #opel also hit the ground running at the opposite end of the product portfolio with the launch of the second generation #insignia. The coupé-like Insignia Grand Sport limousine was followed by the just as elegant and especially spacious Insignia Sports Tourer and Insignia Country Tourer estate variants. All three have the following in common: breath-taking design, lightweight construction for especially agile driving pleasure and ground-breaking technologies such as the latest generation of the glare-free IntelliLux LED ® matrix headlights or the adaptive Twinster all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring, the most innovative system in its class. All this adds up to “German precision meets sculptural artistry” in its purest form. The #insignia variants already showed their credentials on their respective terrains during the launch – limousine and Sports Tourer dazzled in an urban environment while the Country Tourer showed its virtues in a snowy alpine environment. The customers are delighted and have already placed around 90,000 orders for the #insignia.

With these qualities the latest #insignia generation continues the tradition of large #opel flagships, one of which celebrated a notable anniversary this year. Eighty years ago, the first top-of-the-range Opel Admiral left the Rüsselsheim plant. With an Art Deco-inspired design, a high level of usability and a, for the time, attractive price the Admiral shot straight to the top of its segment becoming the market leader.

Everyday usability and practicality at affordable prices have remained two of the key virtues of every #opel model. Obviously this also applies to the Vivaro Combi+, Vivaro Tourer and Vivaro Life vans launched in the autumn. The trio shines with classy and flexible options making them the ideal companion for business trips or leisure.

Last but by no means least the new sporty #opel #insignia GSi and THE challenger in the booming #suv segment, the new #opel #grandlandx, made their debuts at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The #insignia GSi is a sports machine par excellence, uncompromisingly sharp, precise and efficient. It promises maximum driving pleasure with outstanding engines, shorter springs that lower the chassis 10 millimetres and dynamic styling inside and out. And it is easy to tell where it was fine-tuned – on the toughest racetrack in the world, the legendary Nordschleife of the Nürburgring.

Elsewhere, the Opel Grandland X attracted a lot of attention in Frankfurt thanks to its cool off-road look while simultaneously becoming the third member of the #opel X-Family alongside the #crosslandx and the #grandlandx. Stylish and strong, dynamic and technically up-to-date the second model developed in cooperation with Groupe #psa makes everyday driving exciting again. Journalists found out just how exciting during the launch in the Main region while customers had to wait until the #grandlandx arrived at dealers at the end of October. And they were once again won over by the “German precision” of the characteristic #opel styling, which has resulted in nearly 50,000 orders from across Europe. However, the compact #suv not only impresses with the usual #opel qualities – it will also be the first #opel to be available as a plug-in hybrid. “This is the next important example of the chances being part of Groupe #psa brings with it. We will follow this path closely,” said #opel CEO Michael Lohscheller at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Electrifying future

Opel already gave a glimpse of a sustainable path to the future with the Opel Ampera-e this year. It is not without reason that the revolutionary electric car with a driving range unrivalled in its segment joined the elite group of “Golden Steering Wheel” winners made in Rüsselsheim. However, this is only the start. All European #opel passenger car models will offer an electric option by 2024 – either as a battery electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid alongside the offering of highly efficient combustion engines. Opel/Vauxhall will have four electrified options in the market by 2020. These include the Grandland X PHEV along with a battery electric version of the next generation Corsa. And the model offensive will continue with the new Opel Combo to be launched in just a few months.
